Beware of scams: Research the organization

The Better Business Bureau is warning against potential scams. They offer this advice to people who want to give to help people in Haiti

• Don't rush to send off a donation. Take your time and research the charity. Check out the organization at sites for the Better Business Bureau, the Foundation Center or Charity Navigator.
• Never send cash. Use a check or credit card
• Donate to established organizations who already help people in Haiti
• Be careful of charities that have similar names to legitimate ones

The BBB says many scams came about after other natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. The Red Cross is also advising people who donate to specify that they want their money to be used for international relief efforts in Haiti. So while it is a great idea to give money to help people in Haiti, remember to give wisely, so the money ends up in the right place.
